Существует версия, что это акроним от port out, starboard home, который объясняет, что обеспеченные пассажиры, направлявшиеся в Индию, могли платить за более дорогие каюты на port side (по левому борту) парохода по пути туда, и за starboard side (по правому борту) по пути обратно. Эти каюты обеспечивали им защиту от солнца и жары в обоих направлениях. Однако это колоритное и занимательное объяснение никогда никем не обосновывалось.
